The Jazz Standard

I’d forgotten how good a big band sounds. There are 19 members of this group: piano, bass, drums, voice, 5 saxes, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones and the conductor. My pal, Theo Bleckmann, voice and Kenny Wheeler (now 81) played trumpet for most of the The joint was packed which is always nice. I like Table 16 and got there early in order to nab it. The food is delicious especially the Deviled Eggs. All the music was composed by Wheeler and that included “7, 8, 9” written for his 80th birthday, “Cantor No. 1” and “Old Ballad” with “Enowena” (A new one backwards) ended the set. As this was part of the FONT festival, it seemed to me that trumpets were featured; no trombone solos, for instance. To hear groups of horns again was a real pleasure. It was all good and I would have stayed for the second set except it was sold out.
