UCSD Concert Hall
I will offer some photos and a few words about this marvelous concert. I will let Robert Bush’s review really speak about the music in his usual knowledgeable and articulate way. http://bit.ly/L41oY9 . The first half of the concert were duos and improvisation with Anthony Davis, piano, and Nicole Mitchell on flutes. Now I gotta say while I do love hearing the young musicians perform and discover their new music, it is sheer pleasure to hear the artistry and mastery mature, talented and creative musicians such as Tony and Nicole. (It takes time as well as talent). I had not heard her live before but know of her work as she is a member and a Past President of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Her luscious flute playing as well as her sophisticated compositions were a thrill. Anthony, well . . . his compositions from solo piano to big opera productions are masterful and his performances on piano match that. They way they spoke to each other (tonal or dissonant, with a serious groove or ragged) via their instruments, we knew that they knew and we could relax and enjoy each note. Thank you.
