Fresh Sound – David Shively, Solo Percussion

David playing Resonance Alloy - gorgeous

Another special night. David Shively from New York was here to perform some glorious music and he succeeded. The first piece was one of my all time favorites that I heard him perform in New York and knew he must must bring it on home to SD: “Resonance Alloy” by Keeril Makan. This is a 29 minute piece for a gong and cymbals. Robert Bush’s review (below) describes it well but I will say that I never knew that those instruments could create such truly amazing sounds. I have the CD and even listen to it in the car which we know is not the best place but there I have time to listen. The second piece was Shively’s rendition of Max Neuhaus‘ rendition of John Cage’s 1958 “Fontana Mix” originally created in 1958. This was mainly feedback which also fed the audience a new, albeit, 50 year old experience. The night ended with “Cradle Song” a piece composed by Andrew Byrne and David for Crotales. This added to the night of singing/ringing sounds. He called them drones but that doesn’t conjur up the right image for me. Drones can be boring and this music was far from that. Lucky us to be able to hear live this level of creativity, talent and skill.
