Ken Filiano, bassist and Anders Nilsson, guitar

Bassist Ken Filiano and guitarist Anders Nilsson first met in 2000 at a jam session in New York City. Ever since a musical and personal friendship has been forged based upon trust and intuition. This intuitive bond comes in handy when they embark into the magic of in-the-moment improvisation or dissecting composed structures. They treat music as a rollercoaster of dynamic expression over-riding stylistic constraints, weaving in and out of free improvisations, original compositions, and perhaps a standard or two with a sense of drama, seamlessness and humor. Over the years they have performed numerous concerts, both in the US and Europe, as joint members of several groups – with Fulminate Trio (together with percussionist Michael Evans), Fay Victor Ensemble, Anders Nilsson's AORTA Ensemble, with California poet Bonnie Barnett, and occasionally as a duo. This San Diego performance marks their first appearance together on the west coast.

Ken Filiano

Ken Filiano, double bass and composer, performs throughout the world, playing and recording with leading artists in jazz, spontaneous improvisation, classical, world/ethnic, and interdisciplinary performance, fusing the rich traditions of the double bass with his own seemingly limitless inventiveness. Critics have called him a "creative virtuoso," a "master of technique" . . . "a paradigm of that type of artist. . . who can play anything in any context and make it work, simply because he puts the music first and leaves peripheral considerations behind." An integral member of numerous ensembles, Ken also composes for his own quartet, Quantum Entanglements, (with Michael Attias, Michael T.A. Thompson, and Tony Malaby). His extensive discography includes the solo bass CD, “subvenire” (NineWinds) and his Quantum Entanglements CD, “Dreams From a Clown Car” (Clean Feed). Ken teaches bass and improvisation at his Brooklyn studio, and is on the teaching roster at The New School in New York.

Anders Nilsson

Anders Nilsson is known for his versatility, command, and tone, guitarist and composer Anders Nilsson is featured in numerous contexts. He moved to New York in 2000 after having worked as a musician in Sweden for a number of years. He currently leads Anders Nilsson Group, and Anders Nilsson’s AORTA (in Sweden), and The Hot Trio (an Ellington project), co-leads Fulminate Trio together with percussionist Michael Evans and bassist Ken Filiano, and ExPosed Blues Duo with vocalist Fay Victor. He also plays solo guitar shows. He has performed and/or recorded with many musicians across the blues/jazz/experimental spectrum such as Sabir Mateen, Daniel Carter, Raoul Björkenheim, Eugene Chadbourne, Paquito D’Rivera, William Parker, Elliot Sharp, Fay Victor Ensemble, poet John Sinclair, art-metal band Angelblood. Always into interdisciplinary interaction, he has collaborated with Butoh artist Akira Kasai and theatre director Doris Mirescu. Nilsson’s work as a composer includes music for short films, dance performances, theatre plays, as well as a book of compositions for ensembles and solo guitar of which some can be heard on 5 critically acclaimed albums.
